“You’re kidding me, right? Please tell me this is a joke.”

I’m locked inside a bathroom stall whispering into my phone. “Of course I’m not joking. Quinn’s ex is sitting a few tables away from us. For all I know, he might be a crazy stalker. Why does this always happen to me, Jane?”

My friend sighs on the other end of the line. “I agree this is a very unusual situation, but you’re never going to convince me that the Universe is conspiring against you, Casey. Frankly, the Universe has a lot of more important things to worry about than ruining your date. So what’s your next step?”

“Isn’t it obvious? I’m going to wait here until they start turning off the lights and then I’ll sprint out of the restaurant and get into your car. Because you’re coming to rescue me.”

Jane lets out a laugh that I’m sure the ladies occupying the other stalls can hear loud and clear. “I most certainly am not. You’re going to march out of that bathroom and go back to your date. Didn’t Phyllis say he was having a hard time dealing with the break-up? You’re probably helping him to move on. And the whole point of this operation is that he moves on… with you.”

I close my eyes and sigh. “I know. But I have to warn you. If this doesn’t work out, I’m heavily considering cat adoption. Maybe even more than one. You’re going to need to stock up on your allergy medication.”

“That's a great idea. We can talk more about it in the morning.” Jane is totally calling my bluff—I’ve been threatening to get a cat to solidify my spinster status for almost two years now.

“What were you doing when I called? Anything fun?” I asked. She's probably putting up decorations or tackling the long list of people she sends Christmas cards to every year. For once, I want to know everything about it.

“Casey. You need to get off the phone and go back to your date.”

I can't argue with Jane’s bossy voice. If I don’t end the call, she's going to hang up on me. “Fine,” I say, defeated. “I’ll talk to you soon.”

After splashing a bit of cold water on my face, I give my reflection a pep talk. I’m going to make the most of this evening—or so I tell the frowning face looking back at me.

“Everything okay?” Quinn asks when I get back to the table. He points to a basket overflowing with crusty bread and tiny tubs of butter. “We have bread.”

It almost sounds like a peace offering and I can’t help but smile. “Thank goodness. I’m starving.”
